Abstract
Title : Arbitrary Low Bit Rate Image Compression Using Wavelets
Authors : Jacques Froment and Stéphane Mallat
We introduce a compact image coding algorithm adapted to the properties of
the human visual perception, in the sense that it separates the edge
from the texture information.
Multiscale edges are detected from the local maxima of a dyadic wavelet
transform modulus. The important edges are selected and coded in the wavelet
domain, on a geometric basis.
The remaining wavelet coefficients carry mostly the texture information.
Another wavelet representation is computed using a biorthonormal wavelet
transform on the reconstructed image from the coded edges.
The important textures are selected and coded in this alternative
wavelet domain, on a energy criterion basis.
The reconstruction is done by adding the coded edge image with the coded
texture image.
