Abstract
Title : Second Generation Compact Image Coding with Wavelets
Authors : J.Froment, S.Mallat
We introduce a compact image coding algorithm that separates the edge
from the texture information.
It allows us to adapt the coding precision to the properties
of the human visual perception.
Multiscale edges are detected from the local maxima of the wavelet
transform modulus. We reconstruct an image approximation
from the important edges that are selected by the coding algorithm.
An error image is computed by subtracting the reconstructed image
from the original one. It carries mostly the texture information.
The textures are coded within a wavelet orthonormal basis.
We show image coding examples, with compression ratio of 40 and of 100.
